With all this hype around The Jersey Shore I am starting to wonder how much bigger heads will get on all the current Guidos and how many average Americans have turned into Guidos because of the show. TV has produced absurd characters and casts since the beginning of television and in turn, the general public has followed the footsteps of their idols that they watch on tv in attempts to get their 5 minutes of fame. What is terrifying to me is the support and motivation that current Guidos now have to act even more like Guidos. I thought Jersey and Staten Island were bad enough, but now we have Guidos gone wild!
As a History and Sociology major it is my job to understand the past and how we can predict the future. Looking back on reality TV, have there been any major celebrities to come from it? The short answer? No. What happens to the cast of The Real World after each season? They get paid $1000-$5000 to appear at bars and clubs around the country for the next 6 months and then they fizzle out. Then what?
While the show is utterly addicting and entertaining in some regards, these Guidos are bound to fizzle out sooner than later whether their lack of acting skills catches up to them or the fame drives their head into cokes out nights in Hollywood driving the wrong way on the freeway. I put my bets on the latter for some of the cast members.
'Til next time,
